Using the notion posed by Cicero that our buildings and cities reflect the values of the cultures that create them, this sessions’s focus is to reaffirm the somewhat lost notion that our buildings and cities can move beyond a solely functional or stylistic imperative and move toward establishing a deeper level of content and social meaning within them. Architecture has this power, and the intent is to re-focus, if not renew, our faith that architecture and design can have direct and positive impacts upon cultures and societies.

Whether a new building, a new planned district, a river reclamation, or a renovated urban artifact, our cities and buildings speak to how we see ourselves and the world around us. Using material from Mark Harris Architects current exhibit at the 2018 Venice Architectural Biennale, combined with new work currently in progress, Harris will discuss how architecture can comment on the ever-evolving notion of our human condition.
